Sumter Regional Hospital, formerly a 143-bed acute healthcare facility located in Americus, Ga., retained Hayslett Group in 2004. Following an initial comprehensive market survey for the not-for-profit hospital, Hayslett Group developed PR strategies designed to promote awareness of Sumter Regional Hospital and its service lines.
“The Hayslett team has been invaluable in our tornado recovery efforts. Without their help we simply would not have been able to effectively respond in a timely manner to the communication and information needs of our many stakeholders.”

former Chairman and CEO
Sumter Regional Hospital
Hayslett Group developed a comprehensive PR and marketing campaign for television, radio, Internet and print for use in southwest Georgia’s media outlets. The campaign included speeches, press releases, event planning for several public functions, and new marketing collateral, much of it turn-key, for Sumter Regional and its fundraising foundation. Additionally, Hayslett Group managed Sumter Regional Hospital’s internal communications, improving and enhancing management’s link to its 750+ employees and physicians and the launch of a new multimillion dollar HealthPlex for diagnostics, rehabilitation and community health services.
On the night of March 1, 2007, the most powerful tornado ever recorded in Georgia, an EF4, slammed into Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus, Ga. With only a few minutes warning, the hospital’s staff had performed professionally – and heroically – and gotten all their patients out of their rooms and into more secure hallways areas. As a result, not a single patient was injured.
The hospital, however, was virtually destroyed. A longtime Hayslett Group client, Sumter Regional management quickly realized that one of the major challenges they faced was in communicating with a huge array of stakeholders. Hayslett Group was quickly on site in Americus, coordinating intense media interaction and laying groundwork for the multiple communications needs that were to come. Hayslett Group facilitated necessary government involvement and coordinated a major fundraising push (helping to raise more than $1 million). We also managed the various levels of communications necessary for multiple audiences and implemented a media relations and public outreach effort surrounding the branding and opening of Sumter Regional Hospital East, an interim facility that opened April 1 and served the community until construction for the permanent hospital was completed in 2011.
Our work on behalf of Sumter Regional was recognized with multiple awards from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).
Over the years, Hayslett Group’s work for Sumter Regional Hospital has garnered eight communications industry awards for everything from speechwriting to integrated communications to advertorials to event planning.
